Myth: People with severe mental illnesses are dangerous and violent.
Fact: People with a mental illness are no more violent than any other group. In fact, they are far more likely to be the victims of violence than to be violent themselves. Statistics show that people with a mental illness, such as schizophrenia, are more typically withdrawn and prefer to be left alone. Most violent crimes are not committed by persons with a mental illness, and most persons with a mental illness do not commit violent crimes.
