Myth: If I have a mental illness, I can take care of it myself.
Fact: Some mental health problems are mild enough that certain coping strategies can help reduce the symptoms. However, more serious mental illnesses require the help of a mental health care professional in order to have the most appropriate treatment and quickest recovery. Also, talking to a mental health care professional will allow someone to get the most accurate mental health diagnosis. Consulting a mental health care professional for mental health issues does not mean you are weak or inadequate. Just like you would consult a physician with concerns about blood pressure or stomach pain, you talk to a mental health care professional about mental health concerns.
